New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – One Month

How is it February already?  Anyway, here’s an update on my 2013 New Year’s Goals:

1) Reduce debt by 68.33%.
Target: .43%, Actual: .43%.  No big surprise here.  When I made the goals, I already knew how much I’d have for this month.  The real tests will start next month.  In typical fashion, here’s a graph of my progress so far (you can’t see it, because it’s right over the line):

2) Run a 5k.
I’m hoping I can complete this by the fall.  Haven’t started yet.

3) Complete a bike race.
Haven’t started this yet.  It’ll come once it warms up outside.

2013 New Year’s Goals

It seems that I’m late to get my new year goals out ever year, but it takes me some time to figure out the financial goal of debt reduction for an entire year.  I have to balance what I think our monthly income will be, which happened to change both years due to us having kids, with how much extra we will have to put toward debt.

As a review for those of you who haven’t been following my blog for years, I like to use new year goals instead of resolutions.  Goals are specific, and can be measured (i.e. run a 5k), whereas resolutions are vague and have no specific way to measure if you complete them (i.e. work out more).

I’ve decided to cut my goals down a few.  I previously mentioned that I was going to cut it down to 1, but I think I could slip by with three.  So now that I have that process complete, here are my 2013 New Year’s Goals:

1) Reduce debt by 68.33%.  I know, it seems strange to put a non-standard number in for my goal, but I figured out how much I believe we could put toward our outstanding student loan for each month, and that’s what the number came out to.  This is the most important goal out of the three.  I always map out my goal for each month, and take into consideration the “bonus” paychecks for both myself and my wife (since I get paid every two weeks but budget every month), and tax return.  So the line isn’t straight by any means, but it should be pretty accurate if things go according to plan.  Here’s my planned payoff for the entire year:

Planned debt reduction for 2013

Planned debt reduction for 2013

2) Run a 5k.  I had this on my list for last year, but never got to do it.  Now that our youngest will be getting older, I should have more time as the year goes on to prep for it.  I’m hoping I can complete this by the fall.

3) Complete a bike race.  I did this two years ago, and it was fun.  As I’m finding out, my bike isn’t ideal for it (it’s a hybrid instead of a road bike), but it’ll have to do.  It was a good workout, and it’ll take some prepping for as well.  I hope by combining this with the above goal I’ll get in better shape than I have been since our second child was born.  It seems like all you can do is sit at home with a baby, but I’m hoping to change that as he gets a little older.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Twelve Months

Well, it’s the new year, and that means it’s time to reflect on how I did on last year’s New Year’s Goals.  I will come up with my 2013 New Year’s Goals soon, but here’s how I did for 2012:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 56.92%, Actual: 57.85%.  I ended up blowing my original prediction out of the water, and even beat my revised goal.  The final graph is as follows:
    2013-01-09 DebtReduction
  2. Run a 5k.
    Did not accomplish
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I hit this goal earlier in the year, but failed to hit it toward the end, after our second child was born.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I wanted to get a whole bunch of products added, and started off that way earlier in the year.  As the year progressed, and very few sales came in, I came to the conclusion that it might be time to shut down the online store portion of the business.  I didn’t add any products the past few months because that has been in the back of my mind.  It’ll most likely be shut down sometime this month.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
I made some real progress in this area in 2012.  I did most of the items early, and never looked back.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
    Did not happen

I ended up hitting my debt reduction goal, which was the biggest one out of all of my goals. I didn’t hit the exercising goals, especially once our second kid was born.  I’m going to have fewer goals for 2013, so I can focus on hitting those goals.  Stay tuned…

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Eleven Months

Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 54.39%, Actual: 51.78%.  I expected this to be flat compared to the previous month, and that became true.  One month left, and it’ll be close if we can hit the revised goal. The graph of progress:
  2. Run a 5k.
    Not going to happen.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
No time to do this with two young kids.  I won’t hit this in December either.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I might end up making another post on this one, but I’ll probably end up shutting this store down.  I don’t have the time to put into it that it needs, and don’t see much of an up side even if I do put the work in.  The business model looks different to me after 2 years of having the store open, and I don’t see a very high ceiling for it.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
I’ve made some real progress in this area this year.  Just about the only thing left on my list is stuff in the basement, which isn’t as high of a priority.  I knocked this one out early.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
    This won’t happen this year.

We made our home more energy efficient, and we still have a shot at hitting the revised debt reduction.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Ten Months

Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 54.21%, Actual: 51.57%.  Due to our perfect storm of finances, we went flat as far as debt reduction goes this month. We have to recover our emergency funds that were depleted, and buy a crib for our new baby. So, for the first time all year, we fell behind my revised prediction.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
Now that we’ve had our second baby, I won’t have much time at all for preparing for a 5k.  This one is off the table for this year.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I didn’t work out much in October.  With all the commotion of having a baby, I didn’t even keep track.  I probably won’t get many workouts in for the rest of the year.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I haven’t added any new products this month either.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
I’ve made some real progress in this area this year.  Just about the only thing left on my list is stuff in the basement, which isn’t as high of a priority.  I knocked this one out early.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
This most likely won’t happen this year.

Next year, I’m going to go down to one goal.  This is too many to keep a focus on for the entire year.  Things have gotten really crazy this month, since we had our second baby.  Due to that event, I can pretty much bank on not hitting my workout goals for the rest of the year.  At least we can still hit the debt reduction goal, which was my main goal for the year.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Nine Months

As I mentioned earlier, we paid off our car.  That gets us a little ahead of where we planned with our debt reduction.  Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 49.61%, Actual: 51.48%.  We’re still pretty much on track, but we did get a little more than the plan for this month.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
Unfortunately, I had to spend the day of the 5k working on fixing something with my car.  So I didn’t make that 5k, and I doubt I will be able to hit this goal now that our baby is due in a couple weeks.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I worked out 3 times this month.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I haven’t added any new products this month either.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
I replaced our 20 year old deep freezer with a brand new one, which will save us $18/mo.  That ended up being more of a savings than I planned, but I’m glad we bought a new one compared to another older one.  The difference in savings will catch up to the price in 2-3 years, and we will save money from there on out (not to mention that it will last longer than a used one).  Other than that, I’ve made some real progress in this area this year.  Just about the only thing left on my list is stuff in the basement, which isn’t as high of a priority.  I knocked this one out early.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
I’m not sure if this one will happen this year.  I haven’t even been on the bike in a while.

Things are about to get real crazy around here, since we will have a baby by the time I do another one of these posts.  I can pretty much bank on not hitting my workout goals for the rest of the year.  At least we can still hit the debt reduction goal, which was my main goal for the year.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Eight Months

We’re still right on track with the revised debt reduction, and I’ve started running more often.  Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 46.48%, Actual: 46.51%.  We’re basically right over the graph, so it’s even hard to see it in the photo below.  We’re doing exactly how I planned it to go after the revision at this point in time.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
I started running a little more this month, and I’m still hoping I can run in the 5k with my neighbor on Sept 22nd.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I worked out 5 times this month, which is much better than before.  Hopefully I can hit this goal next month.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I haven’t added any new products this month either.  With it being summer, I’ve been spending most of my time outdoors.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
Nothing this month.  But I’ve made some real progress in this area so far this year.  Just about the only thing left on my list is stuff in the basement, which isn’t as high of a priority.  I knocked this one out early.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
I’m not sure if this one will happen this year.  I haven’t even been on the bike in a while.

I’ve done a little better this month.  I’m thinking I might just cut back my goals next year to be one or two.  Six goals is hard to keep up with as the year goes on.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Seventh Month

We’re kicking butt with the debt reduction, but not so much with some of the others.  Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11% (Revised target: 56.92%).
Revised target: 43.36%, Actual: 43.16%.  I just realized that we almost hit our original target this month, and it’s only August.  The revised goal is a lot higher though, so that’s what we’re trying to hit now.  We went right back to the plan, as I fully expected.  We’re .2% below target, which is pretty much right on.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
I haven’t been working out much, but I think I could get back to this if I dedicate some time to it.  My neighbor said she’s running in a 5k on September 22nd, and I think I’m going to join her.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I worked out 3 times this month, so I didn’t hit this goal.
I didn’t end up doing the Tour de Donut, so I’ll have to find another one to do later this year.

Having a one year old really puts a hold on most things you want to get done.  I’m back to where things are piling up on me again, and it’s hard to keep up.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Six Months

Well, it’s the halfway mark.  We’re doing pretty good with my main goal, but the fitness ones are really struggling.  Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11%.
Revised target: 35.29%, Actual: 38.83%.  I tried transferring money from one bank to another, but the bank applied it to the loan instead.  It’s not that big of a deal, because I was planning on putting at least that much toward it next month.  It does make it look like we did better last month than projected though.  In reality, we are still right on the graph, which will show up next month.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
This one is going to be tough.  I haven’t worked out much over the past few months, so it’ll be hard to get back up to running 3 miles, let alone running in a 5k.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
I only ran once in June, and went on one bike ride with Brooke.
I’m still up in the air about the Tour de Donut that’s this month.  I’d like to do it, but it’s the same day as my brother’s bachelor party.  I haven’t been training, so I’d be really sore trying to play golf that afternoon with a bunch of the guys, but I’m really debating on doing it.  We’ll see how it turns out.  It’ll probably be one of those things I make a final decision about the day before.  If I don’t do that race, I’ll have to find another one sometime before baby #2 comes.

I’ve been spending more time outdoors, but not so much on exercising.  I’ve been enjoying my time with my daughter inside, too.  She’s crawling all over the place, and it looks like she might start walking sometime soon.  She’s turning one this month, so most things probably won’t change too much.  We’ll see what happens.

New Year’s Goals – Progress Update – Five Months

We’re trying to put every last dollar toward debt until our second baby comes, so we’re really struggling when things come up like our daughter getting sick, and us going to the doctor, getting medicine, etc. several times in the month.  It really makes me wish we could magically get out of debt now, but I know there’s supposed to be struggles along the way.  It’ll be nice when that day finally gets here.  Here’s an update on my New Year’s Goals for this year:

  1. Reduce house debt by 44.11%.
Revised target: 32.21%, Actual: 32.67%.  We are still ahead of the revised target, but not by much.  I have a feeling the revised target will be hard to stay up with, but we’re going to do our best.  Here’s a graph of our progress so far:
  2. Run a 5k.
This one is going to be tough.  I haven’t worked out much over the past months, so it’ll be hard to get back up to running 3 miles, let alone running in a 5k.
  3. Work out at least 2 times per week.
Just like last month, I only ran twice.  It seems like the work around the house just keeps piling up, and I don’t have as much time to get everything done as I used to before we had a baby.  This has been pushed to the bottom of my list, so it hasn’t been getting done as much.
  4. Add at least 2 products to archwayhometheateraccessories.com
I haven’t touched any new products this month.  After working extra most of the month, I spent the last part of the month trying to catch up on things around the house.  So I’ve had no time to work on the store.  The last product I added was from the month before: high quality component cables.
  5. Make our home  more energy efficient.
Nothing this month.  But I’ve made some real progress in this area so far this year.  Just about the only thing left on my list is stuff in the basement, which isn’t as high of a priority.  I knocked this one out early.
  6. Participate in at least one bike race.
The race I plan to do is the Tour de Donut.  I just looked it up, and it’s the same day as my brother’s bachelor party, so this might be tough (since I’m organizing his bachelor party).  It might work out to where I could still do this, since it starts at 9 AM, depending on what time we are supposed to do something in the afternoon.  We’ll see what happens.

I’ve been getting a little more caught up around the house, but there’s still a lot that seems like it’s slipping.  That’s causing me to not focus as much on exercising, which is hurting a few of my goals.  Overall, this was a bad month for my goals, as I only hit one out of the 4 applicable ones.  Maybe next month will be better…
